In the Book of Psalms, David conveys to us many stories of the hardships, triumphs, and trials that he and many others faced as they walked with God. The life stories behind the Psalms we read, are recorded in multiple books of the Bible, i.e. I and II Samuel, I and II Kings, I and II Chronicles, and even Exodus.
Although the hymns of the church are not the inspired, inerrant Word of God, as found in the Book of Psalms, I believe they also serve to communicate the testimonies of many generations that have stood the test of time.
One day as I was listening to a choir sing a medley of church hymns over the radio, I began to wonder about the stories behind many of my favorite hymns. After calling a familiar Christian Book Store, I was delighted to discover the following book which I would like to introduce to you at this time:
Then Sings My Soul: 150 of the World’s Greatest Hymn Stories by Robert J. Morgan
Then Sings My Soul gives the musical score of several hymns, as well as the real life stories of the composers.
Included in the book are some of the following hymn stories:
“Be Thou My Vision”
“Trust and Obey”
“Standing on The Promises”
“I Surrender All”
Each of us establishes a place and time to fellowship with the Lord. Several years ago, I added Then Sings My Soul as a companion to my Bible reading and devotions. The hymn lyrics and life stories of the authors brought an additional blessing to my quiet time with the Lord.
As I read the stories, I related to many of the struggles, fears, and trials the author expressed. The words of the hymns also ministered to my soul. In my own personal copy of Then Sings My Soul I’ve made specific dates and notations in the margins on many hymn pages.
I am always very thankful when I discover additional resources of encouragement and spiritual growth. I sincerely believe that Then Sings My Soul is one of those resources.
In case you would like to look through the pages of this book for yourself, copies of Then Sings My Soul have been placed on the book table in the front lobby of the church.
